“Petrie Building before renovation” by Hans Zegerius

The Petrie Building has been a downtown Guelph icon since opening in 1882, and is now home to Sway. The building is one of three remaining Canadian buildings built before 1890 with full metal façades, and is now truly one of a kind, as it is the only remaining machine-stamped building left in the country.

Several businesses have made the street level of the Petrie Building home since 1882. However, the upper floors have remained vacant for almost a century. The second floor was A.B. Petrie’s office and laboratory. The third floor housed the “inner sanctum” of the International Order of Odd Fellows and was originally only accessible from a grand hall in the adjoining Petrie-Kelly Building. The fourth floor was just an attic with 20-foot-high ceilings and has never been occupied but served the purpose of making this the tallest building on the street.

After more than two years of restoration work these unique spaces are now coming alive. The building has been merged with the adjacent stone building with modern building and fire safety systems added alongside restored original features. In May of 2017 the ground floor was handed off to Brothers Brewing which now operates an onsite brewery and ale house. Two months later, A.B. Petrie’s unique second floor office + laboratory became home to Sway. In October of 2017, the upper two floors are will welcome The Modern Bride as occupants.

The upper section of the iconic façade was funded through the support of the community and the Architectural Conservancy of Ontario. The decorative lower metal façade has been restored over the past several months with repairs continuing before the upcoming reveal of this one of a kind showpiece.

On this page you’ll find five photos that were taken by Hans Zegerius, a local photographer who has been capturing the transformation of the Petrie Building over the past two years (Hans can be contacted via his website, GuelphRealEstatePhotographer.com). Three of the photos have been featured in our space, juxtaposed in roughly the same spot where the original photos were taken. The additional photos found on this page are either archived photos, or pictures taken of the modern suite by our in-house photographer.
